In my last post, I talked about my midlife enlightenment.
Then, I discovered the Japanese have a term for this called Ikigai (pronounced “eye-ka-guy”), meaning a “reason for living.”
Essentially, Ikigai is achieved when your passions and talents converge with the things that the world needs and is willing to pay you for.
In some ways this blog has become my Ikigai. It allows me to help others (Passion & Mission) through writing (Passion & Profession) by providing useful insights (Mission & Vocation). I haven’t discovered the Profession & Vocation piece–how to get paid to do this–but I know I’m on the right path.
If you’re interested in finding your Ikigai, ask yourself the following questions:
- What do I love?
- What am I good at?
- What can I do now to pay the bills?
- What does the world need?
If you have a few minutes, I encourage you to check out this Ted Talk.
